Job Summary

Eastern Washington University’s College of Social Sciences is seeking two Faculty Field Instructors for the Master of Social Work Program as part of the Child Welfare Training & Advancement Program (CWTAP), a program funded under a Washington State contract. CWTAP is a partnership between Eastern Washington University, University of Washington, Alliance for Child Welfare Excellence, and Washington’s Children’s Administration. One position is located in Everett, Washington, and the second position is located in Spokane, Washington.

CWTAP’s goal is to enhance professional practice in child welfare, provide educational assistance to current and/or potential social workers who are committed to a career in public child welfare, and to recruit and retain highly trained, ethnically diverse social workers with advanced degrees. CWTAP students complete their practicum in a Children’s Administration (CA) office, the Washington state agency mandated to protect children from abuse and neglect and to provide child welfare services to families. The CWTAP program at the EWU School of Social Work provides educational assistance to current and/or potential social workers who are committed to a career in public child welfare, and are accepted and enrolled in one of the EWU Master of Social Work full or part-time programs.

Eastern’s full-time program begins new cohort cycles each fall. First year students complete their foundation practicum winter and spring, and second year students complete their advance practicum fall, winter and spring.

Eastern’s part-time programs operate on a three-year cycle for each student cohort; during the last two years of the cohort cycle students are in practicum. As a result, CWTAP lecturers are budgeted for two successive one-year appointments to provide field support to the current cohort during foundation and advanced practicum, with an additional quarter (3 months) for training and preparation prior to start of practicum (2 years, 3 months total). At this time, we are recruiting to fill positions in Everett and in Spokane to support students for two years and three months (spring 2018 through spring 2020).

The School of Social Work offers diversity and breadth in programs, including full-time BASW and MSW programs, part-time BASW and MSW programs offered at sites throughout Washington State, including advance standing options. The social work programs prepare students for competency-based generalist and advanced generalist social work practice in both rural and urban communities. Eastern Washington University School of Social Work is fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. Additionally, the School offers specialized programs through our Center for Aging Studies, Disability Studies, and Addiction Studies Programs.

CWTAP Field Instructors (FI’s) work under the supervision of the Director of the Washington IV-E Child Welfare Training & Advancement Program (CWTAP). Primary responsibilities include:

  • Recruit CA employees as applicants for MSW programs, and perform general recruiting of non-CA employees for CWTAP.
  • Develop IV-E field placements throughout the Region and recruit the best possible Agency Field Instructors to work with students in field.
  • Maintain a positive presence in, and relationships with CA offices within the Region.
  • Provide qualified supervision for students located in CA offices throughout the Region.
  • Ensure students serve only Title IV-E eligible clients and document assigned Title IV-E cases according to policy.
  • Provide practicum advising for CWTAP students.
  • Teach practicum seminar to IV-E students. In seminar, FI’s perform a critical role in helping students make conceptual linkages between classroom and practicum experiences.
  • Teach specialized public child welfare course, including regularly revising and updating curriculum.
  • Work with Agency Field Instructors to evaluate and grade student competency-based performance in field and seminar.
  • Participate in all trainings offered by EWU Office of Field.
  • Adhere to all EWU Office of Field policies and procedures.
  • Work in collaboration with the School of Social Work faculty and staff including off-site personnel (part-time programs).
  • Coordinate and attend quarterly CWTAP Advisory Committee meetings and CWTAP student meetings.
  • Attend all practice-related trainings offered by CA.
  • Participate in other CWTAP specific meetings and events including annual student conference.
  • Prepare students for hire by CA during the last quarter of their program.
  • Promote recruitment of students for job openings within CA nearing and upon graduation from MSW programs.
  • Maintain consistent communication with CWTAP Director, and immediately inform CWTAP Director of any challenges.

Conditions of Employment

The required start date for these positions is 04/02/2018. To be considered eligible for appointment into these positions, applicants must be available and able to start in the position no later than 04/02/2018.

Position #1 is based in the Children’s Administration offices located near the Spokane campus, and includes in-classroom teaching as part of its position responsibilities. As a result, this position will not be filled with a candidate who seeks an on-line only, remote teaching position.

Position #2 is based in offices near the Everett campus (offices are located in the area known as Smokey Point), and includes in-classroom teaching as part of its position responsibilities. As a result, this position will not be filled with a candidate who seeks an on-line only, remote teaching position.

The CWTAP contract is renewed annually, with a track record of over 20 years of successful annual renewals. At this time, we are recruiting to fill positions in both Spokane and Everett; these positions will support students for two years and three months (spring 2018 through spring 2020).

Required Qualifications

• Masters of Social Work (MSW) degree.
• Minimum of three years professional post-MSW practice experience in public child welfare, preferably with Washington State Children’s Administration.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
• Strong communication skills, both written and verbal with strong attention to detail.
• Demonstrated experience and history of culturally competent practice with diverse communities, including understanding the need for universal accessibility.
• Ability to travel, valid Washington State driver’s license, and reliable transportation. Position requires frequent travel throughout the Region, sometimes requiring overnight stays.
• Ability to complete and pass a criminal background check.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience as an Agency Field Instructor, educator, or teacher.
